Lately I’ve been working on a few different book ideas for our shop. Mostly, I’ve been experimenting with covers and binding techniques.
Switching back and forth between the case bindings and the sewn ones, I find a lot to like about both. This one, my “Chicken or the Egg?” book, is a collage of old images on book board, sealed with several coats of Modge Podge. I really like the feeling of the cover — it’s very hard and slick. And I liked working with the materials by hand rather than making a computer collage, which feels sort of detached from the process.
I love the old images, which I found in various places, including a fantastic used book shop near here, Rodgers Book Barn, and the internet. Plus, there’s the chicken aspect, which I can’t pass up. Fortunately, our chickens have started laying again, so we won’t have to dress them up and bring them in the house.
