Last month was national letter writing month. I embarked on it with all good intentions but ended up fizzling out. It’s not that I don’t live writing letter, it’s that I seem to have fallen into the pit of impatience, where emailing seems so much more practical. It’s also laziness, and I plan on working on it, partly because I love reading letters so much.
Which is why when Baylor University made available the digital collection of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning’s letters to each other, I made a beeline for it. All together, the poets exchanged 573 letters filled with beautifully-turned phrases and expressions of adoration that make you wonder whether their fights could possibly have been like.
As for me, I’ll go back to my letter writing, and try to stick with it this time.
